no news is pretty much good news. we've gotten charles' bike (borrowed from chris mcclendon) in like new shape, it's a super smooth ride. got more stuff together and got my money stuff all worked out. tomorrow i'll have to get oswald down to my parents house so he'll be fed for the next two months, and try to find some panniers for my brother to use for the ride. lots left to do i'm a bit worried that brad is taking it a little too easy, i don't think he's even got is cds picked out for the trip <grin>.
As the subject says this email servers two purposes, first give everyone an idea what our route/schedule (I can't seem to figure out how to spell itinerary) is and to test this mailing list.

ITINERARY
=========
Brad and I are currently planning to leave around the June 1st. We'll ride up to Portland OR and visit our friend and old roommate and Chris Larson. We're allowing quite a bit of time for this leg of the tour so it can serve as a shakedown ride if necessary.
From there were going to drop down into Boise ID and visit Bob and Airielle, two of the students I met in Spain.
We'll take back highways as much as possible on our way into Yellowstone, where hopefully we'll be able to hook up with Jackie Fecteau a friend from Reno who will be working in the park for the summer.
Striking out across the Great Plains we're going to meet Erin, Brad's girlfriend, in Chicago around July 15th. We'll stay in the city for a few days with Heather, (Works at Pneumatic) another Reno person.
In Northwest Ohio we'll visit Aaron another student I met in Spain. From here on we'll be heading for Boston MA, our final destination on the Atlantic Ocean. After hanging around the city for a day or two we'll take Amtrak back to Reno.

PROGRESS

Some good news, Brad's new BikeE CT has arrived. Hopefully after he finishes up school this week we'll be able to get some miles on it.

If you'd like to email me use the address amorton@earthling.net , it'll be forwarded to me while I'm on the road.
i spent most of the morning with my brother and brad trying to get stuff togther for the ride. it's hit me how long we're going to be gone and how sick i'll be of brad (and he of me) by the end.
i'm getting fucking sick of the pearl harbor hype, every channel seems to have a documentary on about the attack. in a historical context i'd take my chances at pearl harbor rather than hiroshima or nagasaki.
where did the the term greatest generation come from? don't get me wrong they all made a great sacrifice but i don't think that any generation would done the same. a sneak attack from a nation that's already invaded china is a little more substantial than "die for oil".
i went to a show for the frist time in six plus months, it was sort of a chris mcclendon going away thing. both of his bands played and it was alright. i made the rounds of the punk rock scene, saw brooke, vegan joe, camile, lauren, andy w, it was good. hopefully i'll go get sushi with camile and dave torch tomorrow, it'd be nice to go with camile again she's the one who got me into sushi.
got chris mcclendon's bike tonight, it's the one my brother is going to ride up to portland with brad and i. i've got to get a tune up done on it and help my brother find some panniers (saddle bags) for it.
in other news i've moved the journal completely to php. picture uploading is there but it's slow. instead of running of a machine at my old office it's on my home server on a dsl line. i'll be moving it to freebsd when i get back, some unix mail solution and moving dns off. i'll probably try to pickup some oracle instead of postgresql ot mysql.
lanie called today, she really wants us to goto boston not d.c., she's convinced me.
it's finally starting to hit me, we leave friday. my finances look likey they'll be in order for the trip, more on that soon.
i've been making the rounds, trying to hang out with everyone before i leave. tonight i went to a get together at niht's house, kyle and jason (from the climbing class) were there. afterwards i went down to aaron day's house and hung out with donny, kade and megan.
there's something about leaving that makes you just stop screwing around and throw for girls when you're about to leave town. i guess you sub-consciously realize that you won't see them if they shoot you down. did i that i'm really stoked on niht? someday i'll date her, she doesn't know it yet, but it'll happen, i'm in no hurry.
the playanet people came into town last night and left this morning. i hung out with them last night and went to breakfast this morning. they're headed out to the blackrock this weekend. i'll probably see them again on monday.
i've spend the last too day's looking through all the stuff related to the murder of evan chan. if you want to kill a few days browsing the net and getting into a really cool sf world, it's the way to do it.
looking for a php based mail reader for the trip. if you know of anything let me know.
man i've gotten the whole journal thing ported to php and it's slick, picture uploading works and everything. i'll get it moved over to the webserver real soon now.
This trip was my first time on real rock. The happies are a great place to climb in the spring and fall, they're just too hot in the summer.
i was getting into the counting of nickels to buy natural ices. then lilly stoped by and gave my back my book, the one that i left in spain with $350 in it. mckenna was with her, i was so stoked i bought the first round, i took their picture.
at some point lilly cut her hair, it looks much better.
hey what ever you do don't forward this to dan gingold. he'll end up spending the next two months sitting at an internet cafe in spain instead of touring europe.
"international intervention and international forces won't solve the problem. they can only serve the palestinian interest to try to impose pressure on israel and that's something we cannot accept," - israeli cabinet minister danny naveh as quoted by msnbc.
while it's true that it would serve the palestinian interests, i think it would definately help. of course if they'd just stop building and expanding settlements that would help too.
i think this article sums up the near-term future of the middle-east. sharon's chosen course seems to only lead to more low tech terrorist bombings and high-tech terrorist bombings in reply.
good old jimmy carter tells little bush to shut the fuck up
bishop was a blast, i got to go to the buttermilks and back to the happy boulders. we did a little single track and i rode phil, joe's cousin's, bike. it had the most painful seat you can imagine, i nicknamed it the sterilizer.
my most productive time is when i'm away from an internet connection, i don't get distracted by the all that stuff that's out there to read. so on the trip down and back i was planning to learn a little php. i came back a raving php bigot, it's almost painful to go back and do stuff in asp. if they only had better support for accessing databases, i could swear off asp all together. the only reason i see to develop in asp is the ado, it's one of the best technologies microsoft has put together. maybe some day the php crew will have something similar.
all this week erin burns keeps telling me about this girl she works with at the pneumatic who's looking for people to go rock climbing with. today she tells me that not only did she just get back from a climbing trip to utah but she also rides her bike every where and is really into traveling. i'm not sure what erin's trying to do to me, i haven't even met the girl and i've already got a crush on her.
joe and i are leaving for bishop in meer minutes. my hands got totally torn up afteter helping my mom plant some flowers in my front yard so i'm not looking forward to tearing the blisters off.
talked to chris up in portland today, he's doing good. i'm looking forward to seeing him.
this just in from spain, http://www.strangecrap.com/. dan says "bites the onion hard".
joe, ray smith, kyle (from my climbing class), his brother and i went bouldering up near truckee yesterday, it was super cool. pictures should be comming soon.
lake tahoe bouldering and reno tahoe climbing
went rock climbing with my class today, i've got the fucking sunburn you wouldn't believe. this weekend i'll be going with joe to split rock (in the donner state park) and tuesday and wednesday i'll be going down to bishop with him.
well i'm back in the states and due to over booking the proud bearer of a $200 credit on delta.
As I was giving the hostel room the final check for any thing I might have left behind I realized that I'd left The Art of Programming Vol 2 at Dan's house. I then realized that inside of that was a couple hundred dollars that I'd stashed there along with my "eTicket". There really wasn't much I could do, the bus ride to San Sebastian was 4+ hours and 25 bucks both ways, I had to hope for the best.
Even more troublesome was the lack of a box for my bike, Dan had ridden over to meet me at the bus station and we'd trashed the box rather than try to haul it on the 10 minute bike ride to his apartment. It was already badly beaten from the airline and hauling it to the bus so it didn't seem like a big loss. The only problem was that I lagged getting a replacement for it in San Sebastion, in fact I didn't ever get around to it, we figured we'd have time in Madrid.
We were up and gone by 08:15, Lilly and Dan's bus left at 09:00 and I needed to be checked in for my plane around that time.
[reading the dune book]
When I checked in for my flight to Reno, they said they were looking for volunteers to take a later flight because they were over booked. I asked how much the credit was for and it turned out that they'd give you $200 and a dinner to take a flight 4 hours later. Since this trip was made possible by a $400 credit from a previous trip I called and left a message for Charles to pick me up later and signed up.
The meal ticket they'd given me was for $13, I was pretty supprised. In the past those meal tickets were for $7 or so, hardly enough to buy an airport sandwich.
I found my gate and wandered around in search of an electrical outlet to recharge my laptop. [talking with people in the slc airport.]
I saw this guy standing at the ticket counter that looked really familiar but I couldn't decide where I knew the face from. After I'd given up on it the guy next to me asked if I thought I'd recognize Larry Byrd if I saw him. I looked up and replied that if it wasn't him probably been mistaken for him enough that the novelty was gone. I later overheard the flight attendants saying that it wasn't him, apparently he few this flight weekly so they all had their "Larry" stories.
[up late arrrg]
[wandering around Madrid]
[record stores, not ice cream, falafel]
[drinking 40s going to see movies]
i'm back in madrid with lilly and dan, i'm realizing that in 24+ hours i'll be back in reno, it's pretty scary. i've met a bunch of really cool people here. some of which i'll get to see when brad and i ride cross country this summer.
my attention is already turning towards the bike trip, i've got to get to work quick when i get back less than a month till we strike out.
[up way fucking early]
[saw the jap tourist bus. (everyone had been telling us how the spainard are pretty racists, that they actually had yellow bus with a bunch of japanese tourists on it taking pictures)]
[went to store]
[buying stuff]
[boxing up bike]
[bus ride]
[guy falling off roof]
[food, not indian too expensive, potatoes instead]
[saw the movie snatch (and they had movie bathrooms in the back of each theater with speakers so you could hear what was going on while you peed; which was good because we'd drank 40s before the movie.)]
[slept]
[france with Yosune]
[meeting up with everyone, no 40s]
[back to exacalte]
The beach was the destination for today. We walked around the bay, went in a looked at the tide pools, walked over to the famous Windcomber sculptures.
[statues]
[watched dusk to dawn. one word: bad]
[tetris]
we went down and walked by the ocean today, i got some good pictures of the people we're hanging out with. hopefully i'll have some of them up here soon.
i'm doing pretty well in terms of money i've been here over a week and haven't broken the $200 barrier. i do need to scale a back a little, eating and drinking in bars is getting expensive. everything is closed today because of may day so we're having to do the bar thing one more time.
feel free to email me, it might be a day or so but you will get a reply.
