okay i know bush is the president and i shouldn't call him stupid but it's hard when you read something like this:
When Bush learned that Harrison, 58, had died Thursday of cancer, he noted sadly that now only two Beatles survive, said White House spokesman Ari Fleischer.
ohh i'm so proud martha, little george can do arithmetic.
went to sushi today and ran into niht there. i talked to her for a few minutes, she said she'd pretty much quit climbing. when i get back i'm going to drag her over to rocksport.
i just found out about a site called asktog, it's sort of an advice colum that doesn't suck.
airelle, aaron and little bob got into town yesterday. after aaron's car blew up they ended up catching the bus from moscow to boise and then driving down.
i dove off the wagon and into a couple of 32s of natty ice. one highligh was the slap game. i rocked airrelle, oh yeah. but bob is like some kind of gun shooter, he doesn't give you any hit of movement before he strikes.
i think we're going out to the black rock tonight, it'll be good.
tonight i went to dinner with my parents said good bye to my dad, he's leaving for germany for a week tomorrow so i won't see him until after the first of the year. afterwards charles and i went over to to the indoor shooting range. i had a great time, i'd forgotten how much fun pistol shooting is. we'd go shooting my great uncle when we visited him and a couple of years ago he gave my brother and i .45s. we took those over and went through a couple boxes of ammo. it's an expensive hobby 50 rounds goes for $11, and the range time is $8 an hour.
on a bet this guy spend a full day wandering around the home depot
there's a great interview with larry flynn on salon today.
i'm a daily reader of rc3.org, normally i just copy links but today he's put up a rebutal to an op-ed piece by rush limbauh.
wow less than a week til i leave (early tuesday).
i've been telling everyone how much i want to play metal gear solid 2 for the last couple of weeks. as a result dan just directed me to this link
i think this guy has hit the nail on the head describing the situation in the middle east.
how can we avoid making the same mistakes as the isralies?
i don't know if i agree with it but fareed zakaria has a good op piece in the new newsweek about the role of us airpower in the last few wars. i don't know if he was working at newsweek before sept 11 but since then he's had an article in every issue. as the (seemingly) only muslim (although for all i know he could be hindu) with a byline in the magazine he gets to say what the white guys can't.
it's frustruating to read the articles online because when the printed one shows up i'll read half the article before i realize i've already read it. when this week's shows up i'll read that last article and then a few pages later i'll read this one and wonder why no one told her about buy nothing day.
i think i'd posted a link about the the world war ii militay tribunals but here's another one.
you have no idea how much fun i've had playing with freebsd. i'm finally starting to figure out how to configure the little things: shell prompts, console resolutions, heck i even got the apm (power management) working on my laptop.
okay the mail seems to be working again, i don't know if i missed anything but it probably wasn't that important.
it's got to be hard to be a brewer in salt lake city.
i guess i'd messed up the dns record of my mail server, oops well hopefully i'll start getting mail again.
so we were supposed to go see the shins tonight but foul weather at the top of donner summit prevented us from seeing them. i do have a picture of dan sitting in the boat that was parked next to us on the interstate.
i hung out with big and little gink, we stopped by the show on 4th street but nothing was going on. we got 40ozs and hit the mexican resturaunt on south virgina street. it was good and then we went to the karioke bar on 2nd street and met dan's friends. some girl got dan's brother in to the bar and then we hung out. i kind of macked on this lesbian girl for the hell of it. then we went to coregons and i got my jacket stollen. it wouldn't bother me too bad except that my brother's gloves were in it and he's going to be pissed.
i ended up walking home in the cold, stopping for a 20oz of fosters, it was okay. yeah for walking home in the cold. god my head will hurt tomorrow.
the lesbian said she lived across the street from the house i lived in in the third grade, my best friend lived there. the first time i ever got drunk (not very) was in that basment.
i just dropped $770 on a plane ticket to bangkok, leaving dec 4th comming back dec 26th. now i've got to find a palm with a memory card (for backup) so i don't have to take the laptop.
law.com has a piece on the logical conclusion to our new policy of detentions with out charges.
happy thanksgiving. i gourged myself pretty good yesterday at lauren's house, and then again today. i don't have a problem with a ton of left overs, and i've got plenty of them.
so this guy wrote this book on how to make bioweapons that he sells at gun shows. december 22-23 he'll be in reno. hopefully i'll be able to get over there and get a copy.
i broke down and got a two year salon membership. they're doing a lot of cool articles that i'd like to be able to read in their entirety.
now that there's a new version of mozilla out, i'd like to demand that you go and download it. once you do you'll get to see the cool icons next to my url.
oh and the backspace key now takes you to the last page you were at and F6 toggles between frames, just like ie does. this makes me happy.
i finally got my thai visa. i guess i screwed up the date on the form so it expires feb 13 2002. fuck. we'll i guess i'll be pushing up my plans.
so pretty girls really do do the same thing to your head as coke.
apparently the airforce expects you to call and let them know after you remove the taliban from your town
dirtymouth and the oubliettes now have a fanpage. i've got some ideas of fun stuff i want to do with it.
i ended up sleeping in too late to go down to bishop but i went to split rock, in donner lake state park, with joe lan, ryan quinlan, dave torch, dan gingold, and the other joe. it was pretty fun, i'm not really into climbing in the cold so i took a bunch of pictures instead.
here's natalie and bob at her opening last night.
the art opening was pretty cool, free food and beer, you can't really go wrong with that. i'll put up some pictures soon.
harry potter wasn't too great. the source material was a young adult novel, but they some how managed to remove the little depth that was there. the movie made me realize the major plot hole at the end of the story: if the only person that could get the stone was someone who didn't want to use it, harry should have just stayed out of there. that guy would have sat there staring at the mirror until dumpledorf returned. the quibich (you figure out how to spell that) game was excellent and voltemont's ghost was super-sexy, but there were some BAD special effects. go into it with low expectations and you won't be disappointed.
tomorrow: climbing in bishop
straight from the big gink himself: pong
tonight: natallie rishe's art show (with free beer) and then harry potter.
i'd been trying to talk joe lane and my brother into going with me to take the boy scouts to rocksport but they both had "other things" to do. the rocksport people had made it clear that i'd better have some people to belay so at 17:00 i was pretty much in a panic. eventually i got a hold of marie and talked her into going with me. it went pretty well. the kids weren't even as bad a usual. so i gave her a ride home and ended up hanging out with her and her roomate kurt. good times, good times.
jason and kyle were at the gym, they pretty much have me talked into going down to bishop on saturday with them. i think it'd be a lot of fun but i feel like i've commited to something already...
what the fuck were those funny czechs are advertising
jeanne loaned me the second harry potter book last night and by 15:00 today i'd finished it. jeanne said she didn't like it very much but i think it was pretty good, the climax was a little dissapointing but still a solid book.
got to looking at the archives and realized that they weren't linked right, it should be fixed.
it's got to be awful wierd being a fundamentalist christian at burningman, choice quote:
People were free, yea rather encouraged to debauch their lives and corrupt their souls to such a dark and unrecognizable degree of filthiness and unholiness, all the while being reminded of the cardinal rule "Love your Mother Earth. Leave no trace. Do not litter." As if leaving a cigarette butt out in the middle of a desert wasteland is a greater tragedy than losing your soul and spending eternity in hell.
god damn, i've spent the last 4.5 hours working on my mom's computer. one thing let to another while trying to upgrade the motherboard, i'm almost ready to buy a copy of win2000 just get a serial number that works. don't worry i won't do anything rash, i'm happy saying that the last microsoft software i paid for was flight simulator 95.
went and got tickets for the 22:20 harry potter movie on friday.
back when i played quake i learned that if you want to get better at something you need to be around people who are better than you. jeanne jo makes me realize that i could be doing a lot more. i get the same kind of inspiration from climbing with joe lane.
my camera will do this cool thing were it will take a picture and then record five seconds of audio as an mpg file. so if you want to hear part of the show last nite click here. i wish i had a minidisc player.
most of my pictures didn't turn out very well but i shrunk these down so you can't really tell.

i finished the sourcer's stone shortly before leaving for megans's birthday party. i got to see dirtymouth and the obliets (spell check that) play their three songs, pictures will follow. ran into a bunch of old school galena people that i hadn't seen in years <queue the jaw breaker>.
i'm almost finished with the first harry potter book, i've enjoyed it. i really liked young adult books when i was a young adult and i'd put this right up there.
oh, i had an idea for an internet scavenger hunt: try and find as many pornographic images as possible that have the world trade center in the background.
i forgot to post this when i was up in portland.
as you might have noticed I really dislike feel good security, if you're going to bother to go through the motions at least let it have some affect. leaving reno, united, as are other airlines, pulled several people out of line to frisk them and look through their baggage. i've seen it before and i think it's a good deterrent. the reno/united difference was that instead of pulling people out of line as they boarded, they called them up over the public address saying that they'd be searched. ok so i, a terrorist, and my associates have knives. we hear them page one of us, on his way up he drops his knife into a garbage can and the rest of us walk by knowing that we won't have to risk search. good thinking guys, way to keep us safe, at least we'll all get on the plane on time.
i wrote my first shell script tonight:
#!/bin/sh
entry=$PWD/$1
if test 0 = `ps ax | grep mpg123 | wc -l`; then
echo Starting mpg123, adding $entry to the queue...
rm ~/.mp3_list
echo $entry >> ~/.mp3_list
mpg123 -q --list ~/.mp3_list &
else
echo Adding $entry to the queue...
echo $entry >> ~/.mp3_list
fi
i feel like a real unix geek now. it's for queuing up mp3s, fear my 1337 $|<1LLz. i need to modify it to accept multiple file names though.
and in related computer news: the heathkit h19 terminal i was given almost a year ago working with freebsd. typing away on a dumbterminal you start to feel like some kind of oldschool unix bad ass.
oh and on the odd chance that anyone is still reading, i got xwindows up on my laptop and i'll get that journal ported to postgresql.
so that stationwagon that i thought was dieing, yeah the ugly tan one. well it's going to be fine, the transmission was just low of fluid. i'd filled it before but apparently i didn't put enough in. if it'll pass smog it might even be worth putting some new tires on it... although i'd feel pretty guilty about having a car that runs right.
"When I saw the dead and dying Afghani children on TV, I felt a newly recovered sense of national security. God Bless America." - katie sierra
mailed my visa application for thailand today, should get it back in a few weeks. i'm still planning on leaving on or around the 1st of 2001.
talked to laura tonight, talked through a lot of stuff, i feel a whole lot better about it. before i'd pretty much decided to try to avoid her next time i'm up there, now i feel like i could go hang out with her. she's forced me to start figuring out who i am and what i'm doing.
muhammad rafiq butt died while being detained by ins for over staying a visa, the unusual part is that it was pretty much a secret that he was there until he died.
went to see serendipity with jeanne jo last night. it was a pretty cheesy movie but it some how worked. i wasn't even that annoyed at the some of the REALLY hard to believe coincidences.
finally got those pictures of halloween in portland up, enjoy.
the consensus seems to be that i'm better off not "tied to glitter-girl". i agree, she's a very cool girl but we were not the right people. the consensus also seems to indicate that i should ask someone on a date so i can wear "date clothes". i'm with them up to the "date clothes" part, i'm not sure how i feel about that.
the washington post has a good article on the broad spectrum of anti-war/government people out there.
well got back from portland today. got some cool pictures from a halloween party last night. it was a fun trip, i really like that city and i was able to determine that my future travel plans will not involve laura.
look at what those those funny japs are watching on tv.
hey did i mention that i'm 22? yup, saturday was my birthday.
