voting reform in trouble

it looks like push for voting reform started by the 2000 election has stalled. a bills made it through both the house and senate but it's stuck in conference. not that it's a surprise, like campaign finance reform it seems that both parties are looking at how their can make it easier for thier supporters to get out and vote.

one problems is some democrats seem to think it's unreasonable to require a first time voter who registered by mail to provide some form of identification, they're afraid it will discourage participation by black and hispanics. i'd propose that everyone should be required to present a government id to vote. i was amazed last time i went to vote that all i had to do was give them my name, i could have been anyone.

it looks like something will end up getting passed, but it'll probably be pretty watered down by the time bush signs it.
