the office my server resides in got moved today so it was offline for a little while this morning. everything is back up and any delayed mail should show up soon.
this is probably all i'm going to post about iraq until the war actually starts. i'm convinced that the war is inevitable. i'm not saying that the war is right or that we're going to do a good job afterwards, only that george has put so much of the us's credibility on the line that the he's got no other choice. short of a coup or sadam having a stroke we've got to go in. if george found some excuse to claim victory short of war that leaves sadam in place everyone would take note, north korea would keep up their games, it would be a virtual recruiting drive for al qaeda. in short it'll be bad.
so, regardless of all the protesting in all the cities it's still going to happen. my only hope is that it's fast and bloodless. odds are all will be forgotten if it all goes well, after all everyone loves a winner. right?
i wish we weren't in this position. i wish god damn fucking george bush had got some other simple minded solution to the war on terror, and the economy, and his re-fucking-election plan into his head. of couse it's not like it just appeared there, we can thank cheney and rumsfeld for that. i hope they all at least get ulcers.
sorry i haven't been posting much. i've got another paper to do for my honors class and it's a real bitch. i've been doing everything i can to avoid it but it's not working. i've been cleaning my apartment a lot, doing homework for other classes and staying off the internet but it's still not getting that paper done. i've got to get a move on it. arrrggggh well at least i'm not wasting time posting to my blog...
oh, if anyone else is looking at getting anything britannica use the promtional code NEWBCD.
i've installed the new version of moveable type. i'm really stoked about it.
i've also upgraded imp/horde, the web-based email client and the ssl certificate. steve had posted that he wasn't able to get to his mail. if anyone is having problems getting their mail post a comment here.
today (yeah it's still the 14th) my brother's birthday. go ahead and drop him an email.
yesterday was chris larson's birthday, you can drop him a belated happy birthday note.
a new article on salon ponders a new strong europe emerging from the anti-bush/anti-war movement.
i've actually come the the conclusion that war with iraq is probably a good thing. the problem i have is the way bush has gone about preparing for it. when you add in the north korea mess makes it clear what a horrible job he's done with foreign relations. i actually hope those europeans grow some back bone.
william gibson, one of my all-time favorite science fictions authors, had a reading at powell's on sunday to promote his new book, pattern recognition, and i missed it. man i'm pissed.
well this is a bit late notice but i hope everyone remembered that today is dan's birthday. if you haven't already, send him an email.
i've posted a bunch of random portland photos. some of them were taken with the new camera (which works great).
ali davis, author of true tales of a porn store clerk, has a new piece in salon about another crappy job.
dan reed miller, aka sticker dan, at dan, and now traveling dan, (pictured here) now has a website. i set it up in preparation for the big trip he's got planned this summer. he'll be riding down the pacific coast to somewhere near san diego then heading east to durango, co where he'll stow the bike, hitch to delver then hike the colorado trail back to durango, then ride back to portland by way of burningman. approximate time frame: april to early september. it's going to be a trip of kroopish proportions. go ahead a check it out, he's already got some of his artwork up in the photo gallery.
firday night krista and i were talking about driving down and trying to find a place where we could watch columbia fly over as it landed. i'd read this was supposed to be one of the few reentries visible in the western us. it was an awful creepy feeling to wake up at noon on saturday and hear neal conan on npr. the only other time i'd heard him on that far out of his normal timeslot was on september 11th. they mentioned something about the shuttle and my stomach sunk. it was obvious what had happened. through some trick of perspective this hit me as a more real tragedy than the wtc attack. the loss of seven people is something i can comprehend, 3000 in a hollywood style explosion just doesn't seem real to me. this took me right back to when i was in kindergarten and they announced on the intercom that the challenger had exploded. the next thing that occurred to me, a joke from that same time period: 'what does nasa stand for?' 'need another seven astronauts'. fuck.
