got the photo's from bill spaceman's birthday party up in the gallery. as you can see there was a mountain of pabst blue ribbon.
and speaking of papst, there's an article in the washington post on pbr's newfound success with the twenty-something crowd. one tidbit that i found fascinating:
In 1996, the Pabst Brewing Co. ended 153 years in Milwaukee and relocated to the tequila-loving town of San Antonio, where it occupied the aging Pearl Brewery for a few, final years. Pabst finally closed its remaining plants, pouring its last beer in 2001.
The Pabst product line, which includes almost the entire stable of retiring American front-runners -- Stroh's, Schlitz, Old Style, Old Milwaukee, Schaefer and Blatz -- is now produced under contract by Miller, the last of the big Milwaukee brewers (but owned by South African interests).
there's a poignant commentary in there somewhere. buying into the working class brand for it's unconscious image that's really just another corporate mirage...
i've been working like crazy on school stuff. the calc class is good but dude likes to assign the homework. honors is fun but the work is going to pile on at the end of the semester. i'm really glad to be back in a cs class and doing some programing but i've gone and made it hard on myself so now i'm scrambling finish stage one of my project that's due tomorrow... and the faint play tonight. ohhh how i've been looking forward to it.
"The cause is not Saddam, the cause is oil," he said. To press home his point, he contended that American troops who have taken control of much of the city have made no attempt to protect any government building from looters except the Ministry of Oil. "They won't let the looters go anywhere near it." an iraqi who's cousin was killed by us forces, quoted in the new york times.
i've got a bad feeling about all the looting and unrest. i think this is where our unilateralist (ignore all that talk about the coalition) is really going to hurt us. we'll be stuck doing the day to day peace keeping work (a role which republicans have traditionally despised). unlike the kosovo and afghanistan we're not going to have the europeans mopping up for us.
i also don't buy rumsfeld ‘s line of reasoning that we ought to let the iraqi’s blow off steam by looting the symbols of sadam’s power (aka government institutions). we're going to be the ones paying to replace all the furniture, rebuild all the buildings and restore all the lost records. here's to hoping things settle down quickly.
some artistic social hackers have put together a database of barcodes that you can print out and stick over those on the products so you can truely name your own price.
dan had a link to a salon article on how bad things are going in afghanistan.
i'm finally starting to get photos from the reno trip up, check them out in the gallery. i'll try to finish adding them this week.
i've been playing around trying to integrate the photo gallery into the rest of the website. now you should see a random photo and list of the galleries. it took me forever to figure out how to do those small bits but the good news is that now i'm pretty comfortable hacking gallery. look for more changes in the next month or so.
akamai has backed out of a contract to host al jazeera's new english news site.
looking though my server stats and saw some referrals from haplopia.com so i popped over and took a look. she had a link to one of the creepiest sites i've seen in a while, the presidential prayer team FOR KIDS. how fucking wrong is that? it's not a parody, check out their "adult" site. i thought the conservatives were full of shit with all that of stuff on the internet that's not appropriate for kids. how wrong i was, that site needs to be on every internet black list. i sure don't want kids at public libraries stumbling across stuff like that.
i'm still a big john edwards fan but after reading john kerry calling for a regime change at home there are at least two democratic candidates i can get behind. i'm sick of the democrats just pussy footing around with the bush administration. they need to be on the offensive against the vast right wing attack machine.
every week when the new fotoshop friday goes up dan sends out a link. most of the time they're pretty funny but this week's is amazing. go check it out.
i'd been a bit curious how the brilliant rescue of west virginian pfc. lynch was undertaken. the big question in my mind was how they founder her. it turns out that an iraqi lawyer who's wife worked t the hospital saw her and decided to do something. at great risk to himself and his family he contacted the marines who sent him back to hospital to gather intelligence on the number of troops and create maps for the team that recovered lynch. that guy's going to have some lifelong friends in west virginia.
remember the big stink the bush administration was making about the iraqi troops dressing as civilians? now the pentagon is defending the special forces' usage of civilian clothing. instead of focusing on the fake surrenders or attacks on fleeing civilians, actions that truly could be considered war crimes they want to complain about that and the images of us dead and captured us soldiers. every time i see a dead iraqi or an iraqi pow on the front page of the paper i become a bit more cynical. the bush administration always manages to grab the sharp end of any argument.
