why i'm going to college
rafe coburn posted a link to a harpers article from december 2002 that examined the similarities between the (then) upcoming iraqi war and the athenians' peloponnesian adventure. it's a great article but the only commentary i'll offer is "that's the reason i'm going to college". i like being in on the joke when history repeats itself "once as a great tragedy and once as a wretched farce".

bush on cuba
i guess i shouldn't still be supprised by how stupid george can be but his plan to further isolate cuba got me.
A good soul in America that wants to be a tourist goes to a foreign-owned resort, pays the hotel bill, that money goes to the government. The government, in turn, pays the workers a pittance in worthless pesos and keeps the hard currency to prop up the dictator and his cronies.
we can't go to cuba because the workers being exploited? wow george, i never knew you were such a supported of workers rights. keep talking like this and you might be able to get cuban AND union votes.
Third, our government will establish a commission for the assistance to a free Cuba to plan for the happy day when Castro's regime is no more and democracy comes to the island.
This commission will be co-chaired by the secretary of state, Colin Powell, and the secretary of housing and urban development, Mel Martinez.
They will draw upon experts within our government to plan for Cuba's transition from Stalinist rule to a free and open society, to identify ways to hasten the arrival of that day.
i can hope is the george administration can do a better job of planning for the cubans future than they've done for the iraqis.
osr and bui are done
the spaceman and i wrapped up issue #4 of the one speed revolution and issue #1 of bui (bikeculture under the influence) on thursday night. friday we got 500 copies back from the printer. today i got pdf versions ready for the web. tomorrow we fly down to vegas for interbike.
i'm really happy with how it turned out. we put the two zines together, back-to-back in a double issue. i didn't get to do as much writing this year, i was mostly doing the layout and prepress stuff, got quite a few of my pictures in it though. i hope everyone will take a few minutes to check out osr #4 and bui #1. thanks.

saw the mountain goats
last night krista and i went down and saw the mountain goats play at berbati's pan. my only prior experience with their music was my old roomate bob rocking their tinny-as-fuck mp3s which wasn't very cool. seeing them live was a whole different story, it was a much richer sound. john, the main guy behind the band name, can really move a crowd. he's og portland so a lot of the songs were about people and places in town. i'm just bumbed i didn't have any money to buy some records.
