Read more →Deana Discovers Music is a musical journey that I have started. Inspired by the birth of my son, I have had the pleasure of watching him experience the sights and sounds of this world for the first time. Like many new parents, I’ve enjoyed exposing him to albums I’ve adored throughout the years. My goal is to open my mind and listen to one new song a day and write a corresponding review. A year from now, I hope to have 365 reviews for 365 songs. http://www.deanadiscoversmusic.com/

Double issue 08 September 2014
The three day weekend threw off my schedule last week, so this week you get a double helping.

So the exciting news is that Deana and I made an offer on a house here in Boulder and it was accepted. There’s still plenty that can go wrong but there’s a pretty good chance that we’ll be home owners by the end of the year. Now on to all the horrible stuff I’ve been reading over the last week.

I’m breaking my own rules this week and posting more than a sentence from each link.

I’ve been playing around with Cinder trying to make a simple app for drawing isometric images with triangles. I’m still learning my way around OpenGL and the wrapper classes Cinder offers but I like what I’ve seen so far. It’s been a lot of fun doing C++ again after a long time with Ruby and JavaScript.

I loved how the old staff at the Wonkblog—all of whom moved to Vox—would do posts of the best sentences they read that day. I’m going to try doing a weekly version so here’s the inaugural post.

In my last post I mentioned using my 5D for some of the shots in the 1 Second Every day video. I found it a little complicated to get those from Final Cut Pro X, where I store my video, to the iPhone’s Camera Roll while maintaining the correct date.

It’s been a year since Ryland came into our lives. It’s been amazing to watch him grow and turn into a little person. My favorite moment was watching him put out his candle, not the way we expected that to go at all.

Deana and I went to see “Her” tonight and I can’t say enough good things about it. I whole heartedly agree with Craig Mazin:

Every year I look forward to the release of the Year’s Best SF anthologies by David G. Hartwell. I don’t read a ton of science fiction but between reading those and listening to Escape Pod I feel like I’m exposed to a lot of the best stuff.

Sometime back in May, someone in Ohio opened up a PayPal MasterCard in my name. I didn’t figure this out until August when I started getting calls from a debt collectors which, ironically, I ignored because they sounded like identity thieves. After getting several of these calls I eventually called PayPal directly and determined they were genuine debt collectors, and someone else had my SSN and birth date.

Almost a year after leaving New York, Deana and I finally finished our video about our time there.

I’ve been playing around with VSCOcam for the last week or so and, with a brand new blog, it seemed like a good time to post a review.

It’s been over four years since I’ve made any major change to my website. The last time was when I’d upgraded from Drupal 5 to 6. I built a custom theme using the—then state of the art—960 Grid System and some CSS to give the typography some nice vertical rhythm. I’d considered trying to upgrade to Drupal 7 a few times but just couldn’t muster the energy. I’ve been doing less and less with Drupal over the last two years so switching to something that’s not reliant on a database was appealing.
